Richard Webb has had a love affair with automobiles for as long as he can remember. Drawn to the design of classics, race cars, and formula one, he can still remember sitting on his porch as a kid watching the neighbor pull up in a brand new Morgan Drophead Coupe. Richard vowed to own one himself one day. Eventually he did.
Over the years, Richard has collected, bought, and sold automobiles - 374 at last count - and raced a few of them in IMSA, SCCA, and vintage racing events. Once the art bug hit, it was natural for him to focus on automobiles as his subject.
As a classically trained artist, Richard is able to paint finer details with precision, capturing the nuances and artful design of all moving vehicles - automobiles, motorcycles, and even airplanes; and his love of contemporary art gives him the desire and skill to create more painterly backgrounds, stark colorful contrasts, and tone on tone works of art. His painstaking grid style approach begins by sketching the subject on handcrafted wooden panels one square inch at a time! He then applies multiple layers of acrylic paint and protective coatings to ensure permanency. At times, Richard will take calculated risks using nontraditional items as “canvas” such as surfboards and he has even tackled the subject of rust in his “Oxidation Series”.
An award winning artist, Richard has been commissioned by art collectors, car aficionados, and major global brands. He studied graphic art at Pratt Institute in Brooklyn, NY and advertising design and graduate level painting at Florida State University in Tallahassee, FL. Upon graduation Richard went into advertising and brand design owning a number of marketing and advertising agencies in Florida and Georgia.
Today, Richard resides in Atlanta, Georgia with his wife. He is the proud father of four grown sons and grandfather of two girls. They can all tell stories of his car obsession!
